Common Website Problems

"I know I need a website but then I get completely overwhelmed by all the choices and how they go together to achieve my goals."

Totally understandable. With all the options out there, it can be difficult to sort through what to use and what to do. It doesn't have to be that way. Let's talk. If I can help you, I will. If I can't, I'll send you somewhere that can. Regardless, you'll know more and be clearer after we talk than you were prior.

"I don't even know what I need to prepare for talking to a designer to build my website."

That's ok. It's pretty easy to get started. Don't over think it. To me the most important two pieces are the menu structure and the home page layout. See How to Plan for your Website. Just keep things as clear and easy to understand for your visitor. Remember, the website is about people, the people who are visiting your website. With your menu and home page ideas in hand and after a discussion, I'll be able to give you a quote for your website. Let's set up a meeting.

"I have a website (Squarespace, Joomla, WordPress) but I have no idea how to use it."

Training is a vital part of having a website and knowing how to add/edit your content so it stays up to date and keeps people coming back. I can train you on what you need to know and not waste your time teaching you what you don't need to know. Get in touch.

"My designer/developer disappeared (or got a job or is unresponsive - fill in the blank). I have no idea what to do but I need help."

Oh boy, that's lousy. I apologise on behalf of my industry. But it can work out. Contact me. You'll talk. I'll listen. Then I'll ask questions and you'll talk some more. And then we'll figure out what to do next and what's the right thing to do under the circumstances.

"My website software and third-party extensions/plugins are out of date and I'm afraid to (or don't want to) update them myself."

Keeping software (scripts) up to date is the best way to protect it from security vulnerabilities. There are best practices to how this should be done. Backups for example, are key. We can go one of two ways for resolving this issue. 1) I can do it for you or 2) I can teach you how to do it. Contact me.

"I have very little technical knowledge or abilities. I know how to email and use social media but that's about it."

I work with people of varying skill levels. Training is the key in most cases and I can build you a site that's easy to manage along with the documentation (in writing or video) so that you can refer back to them as needed. You don't have to be a wiz at tech to have a beautiful website. That said, if you don't have time to add blog posts or make edits, I'm happy to do that for you on an ongoing basis. Do give me a call or send me an This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

"I'm pretty technical and want to do all my own content during the website build."

No problem. With a little training you'll be on your way.

"I don't understand the words web people use and it makes me feel stupid and like I don't know what's going on."

Totally get it. It drives me crazy when techy people do that to people they very well know won't know what they're talking about. I'll explain things with words you can understand or explain what certain terms mean so that you can learn the phrases you need to know. I won't bother your brain with things you have no need of knowing. Take a look at the definition of web terms blog post which can help you out now as you research designers or platforms. Reach out.
